Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Over the years, many patients have adopted the philosophy that routine dental checkups and teeth cleanings are optional. In reality, the opposite is true! These routine visits to our Virginia Beach dental office are pivotal when it comes to catching oral cancer, tooth decay, gum disease, damaged restorations, and the like. Plus, the tools we use during the teeth cleaning are the only ones that can effectively clear away built-up plaque and tartar.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Your dental checkup will be with our experienced, caring, and talented dentist, Dr. Carol Morgan. After introducing herself and getting to know a bit about you, she will ask you a few questions about your oral health. Then, she will review your X-rays and visually examine your teeth, your gums, your tongue, and the soft tissue in your mouth. Once she’s done, she will review her findings with you, including if any follow-up care is needed.

The dental cleaning is when we will use the special tools we have at our office to gently and thoroughly remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums. If we notice anything – like an area behind your molars that needs more attention – we will let you know so you can take even better care of your smile moving forward. Before you’re done, we’ll also floss and polish your teeth, giving you a minty-fresh feeling when you leave!
